When faced with a dull, scratched, or stained stone floor, the natural instinct is to grab a machine or a cleaning chemical and get to work. But in our industry, rushing in without a plan is the fastest way to cause permanent, expensive damage.

Before I ever touch a stone floor, I have to identify exactly what it is—marble, travertine, or terrazzo. To the average property owner, stone is just stone. To a restoration professional, they are completely different surfaces with entirely different chemical sensitivities and structural properties. They do not respond to the same process. Get that identification wrong, and you will make the floor look worse than when you started.This core rule of restoration applies to so much more than just floors. True problem-solving requires us to pause, examine, and educate ourselves before we take action.
